10 things I regret buying

Have you ever looked back at an old picture and think 'what was I thinking?'; I've definitely had that feeling when looking through old bank statements.

For the longest time, I have called myself a 'curious shopper'. I would stop and stare at shop windows, scroll through magazines and watch countless youtube haul videos only to be inspired to buy something new.

Years have passed and I have wised up to my very silly spendy habits. I share my regrets with the internet so no one else makes the same mistakes I did.

1. Expensive skincare

Specifically it is the Orogold cleanser that I regret buying. It was expensive and something that I had no intention of buying. But the persistent sales assistant convinced me. I was young, in my 20s and I felt I couldn't argue back and say I was not interested. I've learnt from this mistake. Never again will I be buying overpriced skincare products esp. if I have no heard of the products before and have not read any reviews online.

2. Clothes I've never worn

I am still in denial about some clothes that I have in my closet but have never worn. These clothes are just not right for me- too small, too red carpet for my very ordinary life and too holiday vibe in some cases. Even though, I can declutter and get rid of the clothes, I find myself struggling to do so. I tell myself my time will come, but years have passed and I am still yet to wear some of these clothes. Clothes haunting me and taking up space. I know I am not the only woman to feel owned by something they have but do not use. Definitely regret having clothes I cannot wear. So am far more conscientious about the kind of clothes I now buy. I ask myself (i) will I wear this item? and (ii) will this fit in my life? I will only buy if the answer to both these questions is yes.

3. Cheap hair styling tools

I've had some very cheap hair styling tools. It was a case of false economy. I got neither straightened or curled hair and whatever I managed to do to my hair wouldn't even last more than 10 mins. To me, this is an utter waste of money.

4. Shoe rack

I love shoes. Shoes are my jam. However, being a size 2 (EU 35), I should have been smarter with the type of shoe storage I bought. I opted for an open rack. My shoes needed to be placed strategically otherwise it would just fall through and end up being a mess on my bedroom floor, completely defeating the purpose of having a shoe rack.

5. Hair rollers

A friend of mine had some hair rollers. She bought them to give her hair some more volume. I got inspired by the rollers and thought I could create some beautiful curls with them. I bought myself a pack of Tresemme hair rollers. I never used them and ended up selling this for a fraction of the price on EBay. Sigh....

6. Last minute train tickets

Once upon a time I was disorganised and bought last minute train tickets at the station. I was burnt. This was by far the most expensive way to travel out of the city. Never again. The best way to buy tickets is to go to National Express site at least a month ahead of time and look out for the fun fares.

7. Monthly disposable contact lenses

Over time, I have come to know myself better and realise my shortcomings. I am not the best at taking care of my contact lenses and so I stopped wearing monthly lenses. These are more cost effective but I prefer using daily disposables. I do not have to bother about cleaning out the lenses and I know every new lens that I put in my eyes is clean, new and fresh.

8. Uncomfortable shoes

I know I am not the only female to have pretty, yet uncomfortable shoes in their closet. With every shoe that I buy, I feel like I have made an achievement of sorts. I have very small feet and finding something in my size that I like the look of is no easy task and it is for this reason that I struggle to cull my shoe collection. And then there are the uncomfortable pairs of shoes. Shoes that look pretty but are too tight or too high or too blister-enducing for me and yet I cannot bring myself to get rid of this. I feel like a theme going on here....

9. Laser hair removal

I bought two lots of laser hair removal. Each lot consisted of six sessions. I was left a lot poorer and with not the results I was looking for. I wanted all my underarm hair to be gone. But I still have to shave. I hate it. Honestly, what even is the point of underarm hair or pubes for that matter!?

10. Acupunture

Did I mention I am quite the curious shopper? My curiosity got the better of me once and I ended up getting a session of acupuncture. I don't regret the session itself but I regret everything that came with the session. I was asked to complete a questionnaire and discuss any health issues. My main health problem, if you could even call it that, is painful periods. The person I was discussing this with went on to create a personalised medication, which was in powder form that I would have to dissolve into water and drink daily. This powder medication was expensive and I had agreed to it but without realising I was agreeing to it. What a 'DUH!!' moment. A very much regrettable spend!
