A wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear

Have you ever been caught out by your wardrobe, which seems to always be full but you can never find the right clothes for the right event? Read on cause I will have you covered...

I've recently had an Ah ha! moment and I discovered the solution to the age old problem of having a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear. I have realised that this ironic sentence has one vital word dropped, 'appropriate'; a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing appropriate to wear. And with that in mind, I went away and had a good think about what would be appropriate; I figured that we will only ever have five types of events to dress for. This excludes lounge wear, sports wear, bridal wear and swimming wear.

Next time you are out shopping for clothes or having a wardrobe clear out, have these events in mind so you always. You will then have a few items in each category which will forever resolve the problem of having a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing appropriate to wear. Also, move over Marie Kondo, the real wardrobe organisation Queen is here.

Formal wear

There can ever be two types of formal wear you will ever have to dress up for, something happy, exciting and sociable (think a friend's wedding, an anniversary dinner, work event, etc..) or you could have something more sombre such as a court hearing or the funeral of a loved of.

For the former of the two types of events mentioned, I would suggest going for a classic timeless piece that would be perfect for any formal social event. I would suggest something like a black lace dress which cuts off around the knees; a midi length is perfect. Too short makes it less classy and too long makes it more maxi than midi.

For the more sombre formal event, such as a funeral or a court hearing (unless you are a member of the jury, why the hell are you in court?!) you need to go smart. Choose a fitted black dress, a blazer and a pair of low heeled black pumps. For this kind of an event, you will need to dress well as show that you are taking things seriously. Dressing well means to dress smart, clothes should be clean and ironed and accessories kept to a minimum.

Interview Outfit:

Absolutely everyone, no matter their current situation, should have something ready for an interview in their wardrobe, at all times. We've seen the number of job losses rise since the start of the pandemic and although we would hope that this is not forever and things will improve, one lesson that we have all taken home with us is nothing is predictable. You may be comfortable and happy in your current employment but if the company went under and you lost your job, you will be back out, handing out CVs, sending across job applications and attending interviews. The best outfit you can wear for an interview would be something in line with the industry standard. However, if you are uncertain what would be the 'industry standard' and you've not found out any useful hints on this after doing a research, then always have a white shirt, a pair of black smart trousers, a blazer and clean black shoes and this outfit will see you through many a gruelling interview.

Smart Casual

For the time when you need to be smart but not too smart and also casual, but not too casual, smart casual is the way to go. To ace the smart casual outfit test, you need to have elements of smart and elements of casual in your outfit and make sure the two are married together. For this, I would say blue skinny jeans, a neutral top (white, black, tan, beige, grey) tucked in, a blazer and a pair of pumps and voila, you are smart casually dressed and ready to do something that's a bit fancy but not too, too fancy.

Casual

The outfits you should have lots of in your wardrobe would be the casual ones. These are the ones you like the look of, they are easy to wear, super comfortable and you can wear when doing errands, meeting friends, going to the post office/ library/ supermarket/ bank, etc... For this, I would say to be guided by your own style and comfort.

Go-To Shirt

Have a shirt in your wardrobe that will become your go-to item. You could wear this shirt with jeans or you could dress it up with a smart pair of trousers/ skirt. Having a go-to shirt is great for the times when you are not sure what the day holds and what you should wear. This should be a shirt or a blouse, something that can easily be dressed up or down. By having a go-to piece in your wardrobe for the days you are not sure what you wear, you will never waste more than 2 minutes of your time thinking about what to wear and this will save you from the unnecessary stress of figuring out what to wear.
