Adopting a positive mindset

a positive mindset won't move mountains but it can certainly make mountain moving far less daunting....

Life can be highly unpredictable; you can plan ahead and show up for yourself and yet life throws some curveballs your way. And while you can't always avoid challenging situations, trying to adopt a more positive attitude can help.

Having a more positive attitude can help boost your overall health and wellbeing. It may be difficult to get started but like any muscles that you work on, positivity can be worked on too and in time, it can be strengthened.

And while trying to be a more positive, optimistic person may not necessarily be the answer to your prayers, it will certainly not hurt your situation.

Here are some ways to adopt a more positive mindset:

ᴿᴹ Practise Gratitude:

Keep a Gratitude Journal and track all the things going well in your life. It can include things you take for granted such as your health, home and family, to the things that you consciously feel more grateful to have in your life, such as your job, your friends and romantic relationships. Once you have listed everything, you may be surprised by the amount of good things you have going for yourself.

ᴿᴹ Don’t Lose Perspective

We all have to go through some bad days, some heart break and some grievances in life. It may not be your day today but don’t lose sight of the bigger picture. Bad times are not a reflection of the person that you are or the life that you lead. Always remind yourself that in a year’s time, this won’t matter anymore; you will be in another stage in your life where you will have different priorities. And everything is going to be okay. Don’t sweat the small stuff.

ᴿᴹ Don’t Waste Time on Negativity

Stop holding onto grudges on anyone who’s ever wronged you. The more time you spend thinking negative thoughts on others, the more power you are giving them. If you find that you can't move on from a situation or from an argument, speak to the other person, clear the air. You may find that it was misunderstanding and they may not have realised how they affected you. You may not be friends with them but speaking about problems directly with people involved can really help to lighten your emotional baggage.

ᴿᴹ Forgive Yourself

You’re human and you are bound to make decisions now that future you will not be happy about. You can only make the best decision based on the circumstance you're in at the time. Listen to your heart and follow your instincts. And if things don't go the way you had hoped, forgive yourself. Know it is going to be okay.

ᴿᴹ Express Yourself:

If you’re hurt, angry, upset, disappointed, express yourself. If you have friends or family that you trust, confide in them. If you feel alone, use a journal. Write out how you feel and make a point never to look at what you have written. The point is to just release the pent-up, overwhelming emotions you are feeling.

ᴿᴹ Growth in Difficult Times

Real growth happens in challenging situations. It may not seem that why when you are in a dark place. But keep putting in the steps that are right for you and in time, you can see the change in you and be proud of yourself.

ᴿᴹ Don’t Overanalyse

Don’t waste your time over analysing a situation. Sometimes things happen that are outside of our control and there is nothing that can be done about this. In some situations, you can learn something and think about what you can take forward. don't get into the rut of analysis proalysis.

ᴿᴹ Take Care of Yourself:

Eat well, drink enough water, exercise and get enough rest. This may not solve all of life’s problems but it gives you a good head start. When you are taking care of yourself, you are being productive and that helps to feel rejuvenated and boosts your positivity.

ᴿᴹ Make Time for Hobbies

Make time for what you enjoy; be it fishing, knitting, cooking or going for long drives. Having a hobby that you are passionate about is a great stress-reliever. It is also a great way to strengthen the brain and improve its functions. Hobbies also give you a sense of purpose when you’re having some down time. And all that contributes to adopting a positive mindset.

ᴿᴹ Give Yourself a Purpose

Find purpose in your life so you know you and your life matters. Take some time out to explore yourself; what do you enjoy, what are you good at and most importantly, what do you care about. Give your life a purpose and some meaning and you will find yourself feeling content and finding inner peace and happiness. Studies have found that 90% of alcoholics and 100% of drug addicts feel that their lives are empty and without meaning- this leads to depression, anxiety and other complex mental and physical health problems.

ᴿᴹ Make Time for Yourself

When life gets too hectic and stressful, make sure you take some time for yourself. This is all about you so do something that relaxes your mind. Be alone for this. Read a book, go for a walk, have a long bath. Whatever it is that you want to do, do it and just let your mind wander and get lost in your thoughts.

ᴿᴹ Socialise More

Socialising is fun. And it also has some great health benefits. Socialising with friends can improve your immune system, lower your chances of depression and lower the risks of dementia. Studies have also shown there is a correlation between socialising and longevity of life. So, what are you waiting for….get out and socialise you sociable butterfly!
