Having worked in mental health for a few years, I have two important lessons; (i) never take anything for granted and (2) the mind is a muscle that needs to be exercised to stay healthy. Getting creative juices flowing is a great way to boost your mental health.
Here are some creative hobbies to indulge in:
ᴿᴹ Knit
Start making your own scarves and then progress to making gloves, socks and booties; these make great gifts for your friends who have just become a new mum or great for you. You get to choose what colour scarves you want and what pattern you want. The world of scarves could truly be your oyster.
ᴿᴹ Paint
There are different mediums that you can use; water colour, oil paints or maybe even pastels and colouring pens and pencils. Take an hour or two out of your day and choose something to paint. You can even go out with your paint supplies and sit in the park or somewhere beautiful and scenic. Get absorbed and lost in your work and see your masterpiece take shape.
ᴿᴹ Photography
Photography seems to be a popular these days with the rise of social media sites and instant sharing. If this is something you are interested in, you could invest in a good DSLR camera. These can be expensive so before you buy do some research and find out what you are looking to get and what budget is good for you.
ᴿᴹ Music
There are so many things within the scope of music that you can turn your hand to; you could learn to sing, learn to play a musical instrument, start writing songs or do your own little mash up of two or more songs. Music is so subjective and such a soothing pastime.
ᴿᴹ Creative writing
Think of a story. Write the story. You don’t have to be too ambitious and try and write a new novel, although if 50 Shades of Grey could be such a hit, then I’m pretty sure there is space for anyone in the book world to become a hit! Writing short stories is a really good way to engage your brain. You can really get involved in your story, the characters you create and all the twists and turns.
