Culling your wardrobe

Inspired by the minimalist movement and want to get started but sure how? Follow these tips to get you started

I consider myself a minimalist, but not the type who has subscribed to only having 50 items of clothing. But

ᴿᴹ Have regular clear-outs Have regular clear outs of your wardrobe, so you are always editing things as you see fit. If you find a skirt or blouse is not longer your size and you do not gravitate towards them like you once used to, it's time for the garment to go. If the item is still in good condition, you can try to sell them on or if you are not likely to do that, you can try to donate to a charity shop instead.

ᴿᴹ Two-year rule

If you're not sure about whether you want to keep or discard certain pieces, give yourself a grace period of two years. If in that time, you don't use it, then consider donating or selling the piece on. Two years is a long enough period to go through all the different seasons and for you to understand if you are likely to miss an item or not.

ᴿᴹ Make your own rules

Don’t follow current trends religiously. Not everything you see on tv, magazines and on fashion bloggers suit everyone's style. Embrace the unique you that you are and make up your own fashion rules. After all, fashion is all about having fun.

ᴿᴹ Have style inspirations While having your own personal style is important, it’s also great to have some fashion inspiration and influences around you, be that celebrity style, influencers or even Chloe at the office who always has nice shoes.

ᴿᴹ Don’t be so rigid in your ideas I am possibly contradicting my former point with this one. Sometimes, get a bit loose and free-flowing with your style and you can broaden your fashion style. When you become so focused and adamant on what you like and don’t like, you are stopping yourself from experimenting with new styles. Keep an open mind and eye and let all the clothes rails in the world be your guide.

ᴿᴹ Choose timeless over statement pieces Dainty pieces like a delicate necklace or a ring are timeless and you can wear with any outfit and for any occasion. A simple necklace can be worn in the office, at uni/ college, parties, etc..

ᴿᴹ Venture out to different stores Sometimes I buy from Next and M&S. I know that these are supposed to be ‘mummy’ stores. But here’s why I go there; (i) no one in my age range will shop there, so my clothes will always be unique and (ii) the quality of the clothes are made to last much, much longer. Girls in their teens, twenties and thirties are known for updating their wardrobe far more regularly than women in their fifties and sixties. The fashion retailers are very aware of this fact.

ᴿᴹ Small change, big impact. Sometimes, a small change can make a big impact. Are you living in your black jeans and a top? Maybe, you could wear a colourful blouse next time you are going out. See how different you look and feel.

ᴿᴹ Quality over quantity It is tempting to buy a handbag from Primark for £8.00. You know that bag will last for a season and then you can get anther bag for around the same cost later on. and while that may make sense financially, in the long run you will end up with lost of broken handbags, the cost of which can really add up. Instead buy one high quality piece that you will not have to replace all the time.

ᴿᴹ Don’t become a slave to fashion Fashion is about having fun and being creative with what you wear. If you find that some trends are just not working for you, you don't have to force it. Just go with your natural fashion flair and enjoy what you wear.
