The largest celebration of Chinese New Year outside of China is held in London’s West End every year. According to Chinese mythology, a beast called the nien would go into villages on the first day of every year and distroy all crops and livestock. On one occassion, he saw a little boy wearing red and he was scared off by the colour. And so, on on the first day of the Chinese New Year, red lanterns and scrolls are a common sight as a way of warding off evil spirits from their homes and welcoming good luck and prosperity. The celebrations feature a parade of dancing lions and dragons.
