Do something independently
Don't wait for someone else to be available to do the things you want. If you want to go to the theatre, eat at a fancy restaurant, go to a concert, do it. If the thought of doing any of those alone scares you, challenge yourself to something smaller. Perhaps, going and sitting at a coffee shop alone or watching a movie by yourself can be something you can do.
The more you do things alone, the more comfortable you can become in your own company. You will see you can do everything exactly how you want; you can sit where you want, eat what you want, take time window-shopping and browsing as you want with no apologises or compromises.
Make new friends
Making new friends becomes harder the older you get. The friends you have now are the ones you made years ago or are the people you work with. Keep yourself open to the possibility of making new friends. Give someone a compliment, ask someone their opinion, strike up a conversation and let the talk flow.
Learn something new
You are never too old to learn something new and there is no shortage on the things you can learn about. And here's something interesting about about the brain and learning. When you pick up a new skill, the brain fires electrons to the synapses. This creates new networks and pathways in the brain- something very powerful to delay the onset of Alzheimer’s disease or dementia in later life. So, if you have wanted to learn a new skill for some time, why not look into enrolling onto a course.
Try something you don’t like
Is there something that have tried in the past but hate and you just don't get the hype? From time to time, revisit the food that you don't like, the music and artists you can't stand, the books and films you could never finish. The more exposure you have to something you initially wrote off, you're less likely to hate it. In time, you can grow an appreciation or even a liking to the item. And having more of what you like in the world, makes the world even better.
Change your routine
Every now and again, introduce some changes to your routine. It will break up the monotony of the every day. On your way home from work, take a new route. Next time you go to a coffee shop, order something different. Small changes in the every day so you can experience new things and find out a little something new about yourself.
Go for something 'out of your league'
Nothing is actually out of your league. You are a work in process and while you are processing, go for something that you deem is out of your league. Is there a job you want to apply for but you don't think you fit the criteria? Don't bail on yourself; give it a shot, send in the application. Best case scenario, you land an interview, make the interviewers fall in love with you and you land your dream job. And if that doesn't happen, then you may find the application was not as daunting as you had once thought. You can see the areas that you are falling short on. Rinse and repeat.....reapply again in a few months' time.
Do something for you
Do something for you without providing any explanation to anyone. It can be something small, something you have wanted to do for a while, but something for you that you have been putting off.
Break your rules
Everyone has their own set of rules. These can sometimes be a little bit restrictive. Break your own rules, evaluate your rules and modify them as you feel fit.
