Keeping cool in the heatwave

'Hot girl summer will be fun' they said.....It's more like hot girl torture!

As I write this post, it is mid-heatwave, temperatures are soaring to almost 40°C. I have the windows open, fan on and barely anything to call an outfit on and I am struggling with the heat. Cold water I poured into a glass is now warm, all my make up is melting in their containers and I keep looking at the forecast, hoping to see some rain at some point. But it's looking like the hot weather is here to stay for a while.

Here are simple ways to keep cool during the insane hot weather:

Stay indoors

Where possible, try to stay indoors when the sun's heat is at its peak. Currently, that is from 11:00am to 3:00pm. Being out during these hours can be incredibly uncomfortable.

Keep hydrated

Make sure to drink plenty of fluids during the heatwave to avoid dehydration. Drink lots of water and eat water dense fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumbers, spinach, tomatoes, etc..

Fans/ Air cons

Invest in a fan or an air con. Get something streamlined so you can easily store it away during the colder months. These can cost from £15.00 upwards and are the best thing to keep your body temperature down during the summer months.

Use sunscreen/ after sun-lotion

It is important to wear sunscreen all year round but more so important during the summer months. Sunscreen helps to reduce the likelihood of developing skin cancer and sunburn. Where you have missed wearing sunscreen and you've got a bit of a sunburn, you can use aftersun lotion to soothe the inflammation on your skin.

Open windows

Get air circulating by opening windows. However, if your window is sun facing, avoid opening them until the sun goes down. For those rooms, switch on the fan (yes, even if you're not in the room) and let the air circulate. It is far more comfortable to be in a hot room with moving air than in a hot room with stagnant air.

Loose fitting clothing

Ditch tight clothes and opt for loose fitted clothing. Go for natural fabrics like cotton as it is the most breathable and comfortable in the hot weather.

Ice cream/ cold drinks

Summer is the time for cold drinks, ice lollies and ice cream.

Avoid alcohol and caffeine

Alcohol and caffeine can be dehydrating so avoid drinking these during the summer days.

Relax

As difficult as it is, bear in mind that the heat is not here to stay. Take time to relax and if you can, take a nap. Leave things for the next day or for when things get cooler. Don't overwhelm yourself with things that don't need to be done.
