What are eyelash extensions?
Getting eyelash extensions is a semi-permanent cosmetic procedure where the technician attaches synthetic eye lashes onto your natural eyelash using a glue to make lashes look thicker, longer and darker eyelashes and overall, you look like you're wearing makeup without actually wearing makeup.
Cost?
The price can vary considerably for eyelash extensions. They can cost anywhere from £40 to £90. Usually this is dependant on the level of experience the technician has. Infills are cheaper, usually about £10-£15 less than the cost of getting a full set done. You may need to get infills done every 2-3 weeks, this is dependant on the lifespan of your eyelashes, which is different for everyone.
Pros & Cons
The Pros
- No need for mascara or eyeliner in the morning. You always look ready and dolled up.
- Time saving; accumulatively you save so much time in the morning getting ready.
- They are customisable; you can get full thick lashes, or some wispy infills or thicker curls at the end. There's a lot you can do with your lashes to glam up your look.
- Pain free and a safe process to get the lashes attached.
The Cons
- Maintenance; eyelash extensions need to have infills done approximately 2 to 3 weeks. Or if you would prefer, you could get a full set done once all the extensions have dropped off.
- Risk of eye infection if not maintained or properly cleaned.
Limitations
Not everyone can be a candidate. If these apply to you, then you may not be able to get lash extensions done:
- Sparse lashes; as lash extensions are attached to the natural lashes, if you have very short and sparse lashes, you may not be suitable for lash extensions.
- Hair loss; if you suffer from alopecia or have hair loss following chemotherapy treatment then it would be unlikely that you would be able to get eyelash extensions.
- Trichotillomania; this is a condition where people pull out their hair, including eyebrows and lashes.
- Allergies; if you have experienced an allergic reaction to lash glue or any adhesive, it would be better for you to forgo getting lash extensions.
Cleaning Lash Extensions:
Step 1:
Use eyelash shampoo (yes, such a thing exists!! They cost less than £10 and you can find them on Amazon and some high street shops). Use a small pump on wet lashes.
Step 2:
Rinse lashes until there is no more residual shampoo left in lashes.
Step 3:
Use clean tissue or towel to dry lashes.
Step 4: Use a spoolie to brush the lashes. Be sure to brush upwards so you can maintain the shape of your new lashes.
Aftercare Advice:
Do not pull or rub on lashes as this can cause breakage and lead to premature lash fallout and can lead to permanent damage to the hair follicle. Extensions will fall out with the natural lashes so you may feel you want a refill every 2-3 weeks.
Do not brush lashes when they are wet. Lashes will be weaker and the extensions are likely to fall out sooner.
Avoid steaming your face within the first 48 hours. So if you wanted to book in a facial, it would be ideal to do it ahead of getting lash extensions put in.
Avoid using oil-based eye products when wearing lash extensions as they are likely to weaken the glue bond and lashes are likely to fall out sooner.
