Dans le Noir provides a unique immersive dining experience where for one night, you can experience how being blind in a world that is made for the seeing can feel.
You are guided by visually impaired staff. They will ask you put a hand on their shoulder while they navigate you to your dining space.
There is no menu as such but you can select a colour option which denotes the type of cuisine you would be having. The selections to choose from are RED for the meat, BLUE for fish or seafood, GREEN for vegetarian option and WHITE for a total surprise. Yes, you are putting your trust in their hands. When making your selection, you can tell the staff about any dietary requirement you have. I asked to make sure there was no pork on my plate.
Eating was messy. I found myself quickly abandoning the cutlery; I used my hands, making sure I touched every part of the plate. After all, the food was delicious and there was no way I would be leaving any part of it uneaten.
Once you finish your meal, you are escorted back to the lobby area and staff tell you what you had. I was pleasantly surprised by my meal consisting of pheasant, crocodile and vegetables. I really enjoyed my meal and so glad to have picked the White option.
Definitely an experience I enjoyed and hope to be doing again. I recommend this to everyone. Not only do you get to try some amazing food, but you also get to understand fully what someone with visual impairment goes through on a daily basis.
