Taking care of your intimate health

Looking after your health also means taking stock of your intimate health. Here are some things you should be aware of...

Vaginas are self-cleaning and doesn't need an extensive routine to keep it healthy. But there are some times that you might be concerned about your vaginal health. Here's a snapshot of some common vaginal health issues and what you could do to alleviate the symptoms

Most common vaginal health issues

Thrush

Thrush is a common yeast infection, experienced by most women at some points in their lifetime. Symptoms of thrush include itching, irritation and a lumpy discharge. If you think you have thrush, cut down on the yeast you consume in your diet (eg. bread and wine) and add some natural anti-fungal food to your diet (eg. garlic). Also, opt to wear underwear made from natural fabric such as cotton.

Cystitis

Cystitis is an inflammation of the bladder. Symptoms of cystitis include a urgent need to urinate, burning sensation when urinating and a general pain in the bladder. To prevent cystitis, make sure you urinate before and after having sex and drink plenty of water to flush out your system.

Bacterial vaginosis

Bacteria vaginosis (or BV) is often mistaken for thrush. The symptoms of BV include a fishy odour, and a white-greyish thin discharge. If you are concerned that you may have BV, you should book an appointment with your GP and get a thorough examination. you should also cut down on your sugar intake as sugar can encourage the growth of yeast and bad bacteria. You should also avoid using any soaps or perfumed products as they will alter the pH and microflora balance.

Tips for a healthy vagina

To encourage good vaginal health, here are some tips to follow:

ᴿᴹ Probiotic

Take a high quality probiotic supplement, designed for intimate health.

ᴿᴹ Diet

Cut down on sugary food and alcohol consumption. This will help to reduce the growth of yeast and bad bacteria in your vagina.

ᴿᴹ Water only

To clean your intimate area, only use water. You do not need to use any soap or perfumed products. They can disrupt your pH balance, causing you more issues.

ᴿᴹ Scent-free sanitary products

Use products that are free of any perfume or scents. Also keep in mind that if you are a tampon user, you need to change it regularly. The longest you can wear a tampon is 8 hours. Longer than this, you risk developing toxic shock syndrome, which in some cases can become fatal.

ᴿᴹ Avoid tight clothes

Your body (and your vagina) needs to breath so avoid wearing tight clothes and let air move freely.

ᴿᴹ Consult GP

If you are sexually active, you should schedule regular appointments with a gynaecologist. If you are not sexually active but you are concerned about the health of your vagina, then contact your GP.
