What is quiet quitting?

Have you quietly quit yet? It's great for some work-life balance and some sanity restoration...

When I first heard the term 'quiet quitting', I assumed it meant employees were resigning without much notice, which would most likely contravene their employment contract. Or perhaps it was employees quitting without giving much reason to their employers, which wouldn't be an illegal thing to do but surely it can't be something so spectacular that it warranted a statement.

Quiet quitting is what's happening in offices all around the world. It started around the time of the pandemic when people were either furloughed or working from home. Work stresses were coming into home life. And while some people managed to have a good work-life balance, others (including myself) struggled.

Ending work at 5:00pm on the dot was no longer the case. It was more a case of finishing up things before the next work day started. And come the next day, it was rinse and repeat. Life seemed to ironically take a back seat even though more time was spent at home. The concept of work-life balance seemed to be just a concept.

And now there comes quiet quitting, something that employees should have done a long time ago. It's all about taking back control and enforcing more balance. Employees are slowly cutting down on all the perks they gave to their employers for free. They are slowly cutting back on staying overtime to work on a project. They are doing more of what their job role entails and less of going above and beyond. They now understand that a job is there to fund a life. No job is worth any amount of stress.

So, if you haven't done quiet quitting yet, it's time to do so. Stop doing more than you are and just do what you are contractually obliged to do. And instead, use your time to create that life that you have always wanted.
