Leaving a job can be the best thing that you do for yourself. If you're at a point where you're not sure if that is something you want to do and you find yourself writing a pros and cons list of staying in the same role, perhaps this will help you come to a more concrete conclusion.
ᴿᴹ You've outgrown the role
You've been with the company for a few years and in that time, you have done everything possible that comes with the role. You've had a few promotions and now there seems to be no more growth that you can get from the role.
ᴿᴹ You want to expand your work portfolio
You want a varied CV which highlights your skills, experiences and qualifications. Staying in one role for too long can make you feel stagnant. You can look for a different role in your sector and expand on your portfolio.
ᴿᴹ You've found a better opportunity
A better opportunity has come about which excites you. This could be a more interesting role, a higher salary, career growth opportunities, even better location and an easier commute. The reason why you think it's a better opportunity is entirely a personal reason. But if there is scope to work in a place which is better suited to you, go for that opportunity.
ᴿᴹ Your life plans are not in line with your work
Life isn't all about work and having a thriving career. You may want to move away and live in a different city, you may be thinking about getting married and starting a family. And all are good reasons to reconsider your position in the company.
There are some less favourable but very valid reasons why you may want to leave your role. These could include:
ᴿᴹ Work toxic culture
You spend most of your waking hours at work. If the work culture feels toxic where there is bullying, harassment and a feeling of discomfort then leave the place. No company and no role is worth the mental stresses that come from working in a toxic environment.
ᴿᴹ Poor work-life balance
You may enjoy your work and be passionate about what you do, but your work is there to fund your life. If you find that you are always busy and you're struggling to make time for your social life, leisure time and time to relax, then it's time to think about finding a new role.
ᴿᴹ No scope for promotion
When you've been working in the same role for a number of years, it's normal to feel a bit under-stimulated and bored. If your current role has no potential for growth or promotion, then it is another good reason that you may want to leave your job.
ᴿᴹ You no longer enjoy the work
Not enjoying the work you do happens from time to time. There may be some elements that you no longer enjoy. But if it is a prolonged period of loss passion, then it's time to look for your new role. Don't ever undervalue how important it is to enjoy the work that you do.
